Abstract:

A new approach to multiscale modeling of complex systems will be presented using the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method, which is a coarse-grained version of molecular dynamics (MD) allowing simulations on larger domains and longer time scales than MD. Domain decomposition algorithms interfacing DPD with MD and the continuum Navier-Stokes equations will also be presented. Examples will be shown from polymer dynamics as well as biocellular mechanics, including modeling of blood diseases such as malaria and sickle cell anemia , and a big scale multiscale simulations of brain aneurysms.

The correct governing equations of DPD will be derived based on the Mori-Zwanzig formulation.
